Add Thermal Properties to Spaces for Energy Analysis

When performing energy analysis for a Revit model that contains spaces, you can modify the thermal properties used for analysis, if needed.

By default the analysis uses thermal properties based on the materials assigned to layers for Revit building elements. When no materials are assigned to building elements, the analysis uses thermal properties from the corresponding Conceptual Constructions settings.

If the defaults do not reflect the desired thermal properties, for most element categories, you can override the default and specify an Analytic Construction with the appropriate material thermal properties.

Note: For doors, the analysis uses thermal properties for an R2 wooden door, even if you select a different door type in the Building Constructions dialog. Interior doors are modeled as interior walls (no opening); they are assigned the default Conceptual Construction for interior walls.

To add material thermal properties for spaces

  1. In the Revit model, place spaces to be used as part of the energy analysis.
  2. Open the Energy Settings dialog: click Analyze tabEnergy Analysis panel (Energy Settings).
  3. Under Detailed Model, do the following:
    1. For Export Category, select Spaces.
    2. For Building Construction, click in the Value column, and click the Browse button.

The Building Construction dialog displays the list of element categories, with the Override checkbox selected for all categories.

  4. In the Building Construction dialog, do the following:
    1. To continue using default settings for some categories, clear their Override check boxes. (Click None to clear Override for all categories.)
    2. For a category for which you want to change the thermal properties, make sure Override is selected. In the Analytic Construction column, use the drop-down list to select the desired construction.

For details about each analytic construction, download this file.

    3. Click OK.

When you perform energy analysis, the specified analytic constructions are used for those element categories. For elements in other categories, the default values continue to be used.

Note: Assigned Analytic Constructions are used for energy analysis regardless of the setting of the Export Default Values parameter on the Energy Settings dialog.
