Conceptual Constructions

When preparing a Revit model for energy analysis, specify the constructions to use for different types of surfaces.

When the model contains mass surfaces, the analysis uses the appropriate conceptual constructions.

When the model contains building elements, conceptual constructions may be used to provide default values when thermal properties are not otherwise specified. See About Rooms and Spaces for Energy Analysis.

Whether the model contains mass surfaces or analytical surfaces based on building elements, the analysis uses the appropriate conceptual construction. For example, for exterior mass walls or exterior building walls, the analysis uses the conceptual construction for Mass Exterior Wall.

In the Energy Settings dialog, for Conceptual Constructions, click Edit. In the Conceptual Constructions dialog, for each Mass Model parameter, select the desired Construction setting.

Separate tables below provide Imperial (IP) and metric (SI) values for conceptual constructions.

The values shown in the tables below are calculated as follows:

Units R-value Unit density Heat capacity
IP ft²-hr ºF/Btu lbm/ft² Btu/(ft² •°F)
SI (m² • °K)/W kg/m² J/(m² • °K)
Note: Values for density and heat capacity are the composite of individual material layers per unit of construction area.

Mass Shade

Select Basic Shade. Mass shades are assumed to be opaque.

Use shades and overhangs to reduce cooling loads, minimize solar heat gains, and increase comfort. For projects with smaller internal loads, such as residential buildings, overhangs can potentially increase heating loads. This issue is typically not a concern with large non-residential projects due to their higher internal heat gains.

Mass Opening

Select Air.

Openings are modeled as voids in surfaces that are exposed to climatic conditions.
