Introduction

mental ray is a tessellation and rendering program that accepts three-dimensional scene descriptions stored in a scene description format called the .mi format, typically stored on disk or read from a pipe. Its operation includes reading scene files and rendering them to photorealistic or non-photorealistic images, which are then stored on disk or sent to other programs. Rendering involves a wide variety of techniques such as ray tracing, volume rendering, photon mapping, contouring, and so on.
