To perform baking on an object it must be assigned to a bake layer.
To create bake layers and assign objects
In the Bake Layer Editor, use the following guidelines to organize bake layers and bake layer objects.

Create new layers, delete or edit the selected layer |
Click New Layer, Delete Layer, or Edit Layer below the Bake Layer list. |
Assign an object to a layer |
Select the layer from the Bake Layer list, select the objects in the scene view, then click Add Selected under the Target Surfaces list. Note: You can select multiple items in the Surfaces lists when you add, remove, and select actions.

Remove objects from a layer |
Select the objects in the Target Surfaces list and click Remove. (Click Clear All to remove all objects at once.) |
