Shape hairs using a Guide modifier

Use a Guide modifier to generate hair guides that shape and deform the hairs. The guides can be sculpted using the interactive grooming tools, generated from existing curves, or converted to dynamic curves.

This workflow provides a quick way to generate base hair style quickly or for transferring a groom or shape from existing curves. If needed, you can use the interactive groom tools or modifiers to finalize the hair style.

If you add a Guide modifier after you have started grooming your hair, the shape of sculpted hairs may be affected when the guides are created.

Note: You can also shape hair using a Linear Wire modifier by following this workflow, although some setting may be different.
  1. Create an interactive groom splines description and add a Guide modifier.

See Create hair and fur using interactive grooming and Work with interactive groom modifiers.

  2. Create hair guides using a Guide modifier.
  3. (Optional) If necessary, reduce or increase the number of guides generated on the surface of the mesh.
  4. To sculpt the guides using the interactive grooming tools, expand the InGuide node and select its Sculpt modifier.
  5. Click Edit to activate the sculpt layer and begin sculpting the guides.
    Tip:
    • Hide the hairs as you the sculpt guides by clicking this icon beside the description. Display the description to see the shaped hairs.
    • When sculpting guides, you want to keep the guide shape reasonably smooth. Add noise to the hair rather than to the guides.

You can also use the sculpted guides to control hairs in multiple descriptions. See Control multiple descriptions using a Guide modifier.
