To create beam elements along center lines

After center lines are extracted from imported 3D bodies, they need to be converted into beam elements.

  1. Select the center lines that represent the cooling channels
Note: Individual channels can have different diameters, flow rates and coolants. Each different combination of parameters need to be modeled individually.
  2. Click (Geometry tab > Properties panel > Change).
  3. Select Channel from Change Property Type to and click OK.
  4. Click (Geometry tab > Properties Panel > Edit).
  5. Review the Channel Surface Properties and modify as required.
  6. Click (Mesh tab > Mesh panel > Generate Mesh).
  7. Select the Curves tab from the Generate Mesh panel
  8. Ensure the Use global edge length option is not selected.

The global edge length is used to generate the mesh on the part. This is usually too fine for cooling channels.

  9. Review the remaining Curves options.

A large number of beams are straight. These options relate to how the beam elements follow curved sections of the channel.

  10. Click Mesh Now.
