To Remove Degenerate Faces

Degenerate faces are triangles that are disproportionally long and narrow

Degenerate faces are often created during other operations that involve retriangulation. In most cases, degenerate faces do not result in poor production parts, but they can dramatically increase the number of corner points and hatches in the slice files. As a result, calculation and production can take much longer than actually necessary.

Tip: In the repair module, degenerate faces can be highlighted in orange.

To remove degenerate faces,

  1. Select the part to repair.
  2. From the main menu, choose Prepare > Repair Part.

    The repair module loads.

  3. From the main menu, choose Repair > Remove Degenerate Faces.
  4. Enter a tolerance which controls the maximum short edge length of the triangles to be deleted.
  5. Click OK.
  6. In the context view, click Apply Repair.
  7. Choose from the three actions:
    • Remove old part: Creates a new part while deleting the original part.
    • Keep old part: Creates a new part and keeps the original part.
    • Keep and compare: Creates a new part and keeps the original part. It also launches a mesh comparison on these two parts.

The triangle shaded in orange has two of the three corner points at practically identical positions, so it appears only as a line.
