About the Behavior of Alignment and Profile Entity Types when Exchanging Data Between Autodesk Civil 3D and Autodesk InfraWorks

Certain Autodesk Civil 3D alignment and profile entity types produce component roads that can be edited in Autodesk InfraWorks, other types produce roads that may not be editable, and certain Civil 3D profile entities cannot be brought into InfraWorks.

Alignment and Profile Entity Types that Produce Roads that Can Be Edited in InfraWorks

When you open Civil 3D drawings that contain alignments and profiles in InfraWorks, the roads that are created in InfraWorks may be read-only.

If a road that you bring into InfraWorks is not editable, fields in the Stack are read-only. In most cases if the geometry is not graphically editable, grips or gizmos are not displayed on the road.

A Civil 3D alignment and its associated profile must be comprised of editable entities for the road to be editable in InfraWorks.

The following Civil 3D alignment entity/constraint types create roads that are editable in InfraWorks. Other types create roads that may not be editable in InfraWorks.

Alignment Entity Type Command Used to Create Entity Constraint Type
Line Fixed Line (Two Points) Point 1, Point 2
Circular Arc Free Curve Fillet (Between Two Entities, Radius) Radius
Spiral-Curve-Spiral Free Spiral-Curve-Spiral Spiral 1 Length, Spiral 2 Length, Radius
Note: Spiral 1 Length must equal Spiral 2 Length for entities to be editable in InfraWorks. Spiral 1 Length and Spiral 2 Length in Civil 3D equate to Spiral In and Spiral Out in InfraWorks.
Note: The entities that are created when you use the Create Best Fit Alignment command are also editable in InfraWorks.

The following Civil 3D profile entity/constraint types create roads that are editable in InfraWorks. All other types create roads that are not editable in InfraWorks.

Profile Entity Type Command Used to Create Entity Constraint Type
Line Fixed Tangent (Two Points) Point 1, Point 2
Parabola Free Vertical Curve (Parabola) Curve Length
Parabola Free Vertical Curve (Parabola) K Value
Note: The entities that are created when you use the Create Best Fit Profile command are also editable in InfraWorks.

Profile Entity Types that Are Not Brought Into InfraWorks

The following Civil 3D profile entity/constraint types are not brought into InfraWorks.

Profile Entity Type Command Used to Create Entity Constraint Type
Line Fixed Tangent - Best Fit Best Fit Fixed
Line Float Tangent - Best Fit Best Fit Float
Parabola Fixed Vertical Curve - Best Fit Best Fit Fixed
Parabola Floating Vertical Curve - Best Fit Best Fit Float
Parabola Free Vertical Curve - Best Fit Best Fit Free
