Uninstall Revit

To remove the Revit software, use the Autodesk Uninstall Tool.

During the process, the following files in UserDataCache are deleted, unless they have been previously modified:

Note: Files in the user profile folder are not affected by the uninstall process.

Alternative Uninstall Instructions

In some cases, the standard uninstall process may leave behind some residual files and settings, which may interfere with a successful reinstallation of the software. When you need to completely remove the Revit software from a computer, including all residual files and settings, use the following procedure.

In these instructions, substitute the current Windows login name for %username%, and the appropriate language code for ENU or English, where needed. Also, the paths listed reflect Autodesk Revit 2020. If you are using another edition of the Revit software, substitute the appropriate values, as follows:

Note: Some of the folders listed below may not apply to your Revit installation.

To uninstall the Revit software using the alternative method

  1. Back up any custom Revit family files or template files.
  2. Log on as a Local System Administrator, and disable anti-virus software.
  3. Using the Uninstall tool, remove Autodesk Revit 2020 and its sub-components.
  4. Use Microsoft® Windows Explorer to locate and delete the following Revit 2020 files and folders (and subfolders, where they exist):

    • Batch Print for Revit 2020
    • Revit Cloud Worksharing 2020
    • eTransmit for Revit 2020
    • FormIt Converter for Revit 2020
    • Personal Accelerator for Revit

    The following folders (and their subfolders and files) are specific to each Windows user account. They are created when users start the software. These files are not removed by the uninstall process and can be removed manually, if desired. If you retain the files, most of the user settings are used when you reinstall and start the software.

  5. If you do not use any other Autodesk software, use Microsoft® Windows Explorer to locate and delete the following Autodesk files and folders (and subfolders, where they exist):
    Caution: Deleting these files and folders may interfere with the proper functioning of other Autodesk applications on the computer. Delete them only if you are sure that they are not required.

  6. Open the system registry, and locate and delete the following registry keys.
    Caution: Problems caused by improperly editing the Windows registry could render your computer operating system unusable. Microsoft provides critical information that you need to know about the registry in the Microsoft Knowledge Base at http://support.microsoft.com. Use the Microsoft® Registry Editor only at your own risk and only after backing up the registry as well as the system.dat and user.dat files as outlined for your operating system in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. Additional information about the registry is also contained in the Help topics in the Microsoft Registry Editor.

    To open the system registry

    • Windows 10: Right-click Start, and select Run. In the Open box, enter regedit, and click OK.
    • Windows 8: Right-click Start screenAll appsRunRegedit.
    • Windows 7: Click the Windows Start menuRunRegedit.

  7. Restart the computer.
  8. If you plan to reinstall the Revit software, do the following before starting the installation program:
    • Use Microsoft® Windows Explorer to locate and delete the contents of the following folders:
      Note: Do not delete these folders. Only delete their contents.
      • %TEMP%
      • C:\Windows\Temp
    • Log on as a Local System Administrator, disable anti-virus programs, and end their task processes.

    Now you can safely reinstall the Revit software.

  9. Restart your anti-virus software.
