Glossary

butt splice

A type of splice in which the splice is a physical object into which the wires are inserted to form the electrical connection or path through which electricity flows.

cable

A premanufactured grouping of wires that is typically wrapped in some sort of insulation or sheath. It is also referred to as a multiconductor cable.

dangling wire

A wire that is no longer attached to an electrical part, but remains in its original routed or unrouted state. A wire dangles when either the part to which it was attached is deleted or the pin was deleted or renamed.

exposed wire pieces

The sections of routed wires that are displayed in any gaps between two or more segments.

fan in

The process of collapsing wire stubs on top of one another to reduce the detail or clutter in nailboard documentation. By default the collapsed wires are displayed using the diameter and color of the segment from which they emerge, and the length of the longest wire.

fan out

The process of uniformly distributing wires stubs about the endpoint of a segment for better visibility in nailboard documentation. By default the wire stubs are distributed in a clockwise direction and to an angle of 90 degrees.

interchangeability set

A collection of interchangeable master runs assemblies or harness assemblies that can be swapped for any given Routed Systems occurrence on a per-configuration basis. The interchangeability set in the iComponent table is used to track which master runs assembly or harness assembly is used in each configuration. Edits to the master runs assembly or harness assembly members are independent of each other.

Minimum bend radius

The smallest radius to which a wire, cable, or flexible hose that can be bent. The minimum bend radius varies with different cable and material types.

nailboard drawing

A 2D representation of the 3D harness that documents the harness position and curvature when unfolding the 3D harness model.

overlapping splice

A type of splice in which overlapping wires are either soldered or ultrasonically welded together to form the path or circuit through which electricity flows.

primary occurrence

The driving occurrence of an exclusive tube and pipe or cable and harness components. It is the only occurrence in which Routed Systems editing is allowed. The primary occurrence drives the definition of all other occurrences.

reference designator (RefDes)

A simple text string such as J12" or R15" that is used to uniquely identify electrical components and component occurrences within the context of a harness design. The RefDes maps the part to the schematic, wiring diagram, or electrical connectivity data.

secondary occurrence

Any non-primary occurrence of an AIP component with a file name of top_assembly_filename <N> in the Model browser, in which <n> is the occurrence number. Secondary occurrences are not adaptive and cannot be edited. Changes to a primary occurrence automatically update all secondary occurrences.

spare wire

A cable wire in a cable occurrence that is not connected. It is also referred to as an unterminated or disconnected wire.

wire stub

The exposed portion of the wires from the end segment to the pin.
