A barrel tool machines surfaces that are typically found on blades. The geometry of the tool enables you to achieve a small cusp height while using a relatively large stepover. To achieve the same cusp height with an alternative tool, you would need to reduce the stepover significantly.
The tables show the benefits of using barrel tools when machining a blade. To achieve a cusp height of 0.125 mm a 25 mm ball nosed tool requires a stepover of 5 mm, whereas a 25 mm barrel tool requires a stepover of 7.74 mm.
