To specify different directions for segments of the electrode extension

Use the Extension Segments dialog to break the edge of an electrode extension region into segments. For each segment, you can then specify the direction of the extension.

  1. If you click Advanced on the Extension Distance Options page, and there is more than one exterior edge to the electrode region, for example, if you have selected multiple pockets or holes, the Select Edge dialog is displayed. Select an edge number in the dialog. You can also select the edge in the graphics window. The edge is highlighted on the model.
  2. On the Extension Segments dialog, select the Insert Breakpoints option to insert and remove breakpoints from the selected edge. The breakpoints are used to create composite curves to divide the edge into smaller segments.
  3. To insert breakpoints, click positions on the edge.

    — If this button is displayed, the breakpoint is selected as a single breakpoint.

    — If this button is displayed, the breakpoint is selected as a split point that can go in both directions.

  4. Click Clear to remove all selected breakpoints. To select a breakpoint to clear, press and hold the Ctrl key and click the breakpoint.
  5. When you have entered the breakpoints, deselect the Insert Breakpoints option to make the other options available.
  6. Select a segment from the Current Segment list, or click a segment on the model in the graphics window. The segment is highlighted and an arrow indicates the default direction of the extension.
  7. Select a direction from the Extension Direction list. Choose from the following four directions:
    • Default — To use the default direction specified on the Electrode Wizard. You can reverse the direction of the laterals.
    • Curve Normal — To use the direction along the normal of the curve of the selected edge.
    • Along Axis — To use the direction along a specified axis. Select this option, and then select the X, Y or Z axis option to define the extension.

Tangential — Select this option to extend tangential to the surface. Deselect this option to extend exactly along the axis.

    • Surface Internals — To use the direction along the internal curves of the surface. You can choose to extend along the Lateral or Longitudinal.

When you select an option, the arrow on the model changes to the specified direction. To reverse the direction of the laterals to the opposite side of the composite curve, click the arrow.

  8. Enter a value in Angle to specify the angle at which the new surface segment projects from the existing surface.
  9. Click Preview to display the direction of the laterals in the whole of the extension surface.
