Implement Server-Based Worksharing from File-Based Worksharing

Convert to server-based worksharing in an environment where file-based worksharing is already in use.

While file-based worksharing provides sufficient performance when a Revit project team is working on a local area network (LAN), server-based worksharing provides the best solution for a team collaborating across a wide area network (WAN).

  1. Instruct all team members to synchronize with the central model and then exit Revit until the migration process is complete.
  2. Ensure that all team members have upgraded to the current release of Revit.
  3. Install Revit Server on all computers that will be used to host central models, cache central models, or run the Revit Server Administrator. (See Installing and Configuring Revit Server.)
  4. Deploy the RSN.ini file on each of the Revit application workstations.
  5. Start Revit.
  6. Open each central model from its current location with Detach from Central selected.
  7. Click File tab Save asProject.
  8. In the left pane of the Save As dialog, click (Revit Server Network).
  9. Double-click the name of the Revit Server Host where you want to save the central model.
  10. Click Options.
  11. In the File Save Options dialog, under Worksharing, verify that Make this a Central Model after save is selected. Then specify the desired setting for Open workset default, and click OK.
  12. For File name, specify the desired file name for the central model.
  13. Click OK.

Each team member must then do the following:

  1. Delete the local copy of the old, file-based workshared model.
  2. Start Revit.
  3. Click File tab OpenProject.
  4. In the Open dialog, navigate to the Revit Server Network and the appropriate Host, and select the central model.
  5. Under Worksharing, verify that Create New Local is enabled.
  6. Click the Open drop-down. For Workset, select the desired setting to indicate which worksets to open.
  7. Click Open.
  8. Click Save.
  9. After team members have created local copies of the central model on the Revit Server Host, they can resume working on the model.
