Layer List

The Layer List, available from the Layers toolbar, displays layer names and their properties. You can control the properties of layers by clicking the property icons. You can make a layer current by simply selecting it from the list.

The controls available in the Layer List are a subset of the controls available on the Layer Properties dialog. You can also change these settings with the Layer Explorer dialog.

Tip: The Layer List is most useful in conjunction with the other tools available on the Layers toolbar.

Interface

The properties available on the layer list for each layer are, from left to right: Hide/Unhide toggle, Freeze/Unfreeze toggle, Renderable/Non-renderable toggle, Color swatch, and active layer (name). To change a toggle setting, click it in the layer list. To change a layer's color, click the color swatch and then choose a new color from the Layer Color dialog. To activate a layer, making it the current layer, click its name in the list. Objects that you create are assigned automatically to the current layer.

Note: Objects automatically inherit their layer's Hide and Freeze settings. But for objects to inherit the Renderable and Color properties from their layer, they must be set to By Layer.

Following are the On and Off icons for each toggle property in the Layer List:

Property On Off
Hide/Unhide (Hidden) (Visible)
Freeze/Unfreeze (Frozen) (Editable)
Renderable/Non-Renderable (Renderable) (Non-renderable)
