To Migrate Files to Autodesk Docs Using Autodesk DWG Migration for Docs

For prerequisites and other information about using this tool, see About Autodesk DWG Migration for Docs.

  1. Download and install Autodesk DWG Migration for Docs from the Autodesk App Store.
  2. Start Autodesk DWG Migration for Docs by double-clicking the icon that was placed on your desktop.
  3. Use the Select Data page to select the data to migrate. Specify the Local Data Location by clicking the Browse Folder button and browsing to the folder that contains the files to migrate.
Note: The folder selected to be migrated won't be generated in Autodesk Docs, only the subfolders will. If you need to replicate the same folder structure in Autodesk Docs, create the main folder in Autodesk Docs first, then select it as target location.

Alternately, you can select Browse Files from the drop-down menu and select files to migrate.

Note: If you paste the desired path instead of browsing to the folder, make sure to press Enter so the scan process is started. Only after the folder is scanned will the Next button become available.
  4. Specify the Target Autodesk Docs Location by clicking the Browse button and specifying a location in an Autodesk Docs project for which you have View + Download + Upload permissions.

It is recommended to select a blank folder as target location in Autodesk Docs. While Autodesk DWG Migration for Docs provides the option to overwrite files if the target location already contains files with the same name, it is recommended to use this functionality only as an exception.

  5. Under Data Exclusion, specify any files or file types to exclude and click Apply. You can remove files or file types from the list and click Apply to remove the files from the exclusion.
  6. Under Data Selection, use the check boxes to select or clear files or folders in the data tree.
  7. Click Next to check the data integrity.

A data integrity check is performed. Any issues that are found are listed in the issues list.

  8. Click the icon in the View Details column or select the issue type to view details about each issue type and to resolve the issues.
Note: You can click Export to export CSV files of the issues that were identified.
  9. Move your cursor over the icon in the Help column to display information about each issue type. For more information about each issue type, see About Autodesk DWG Migration for Docs.
    • To view and resolve circular references, click the file name to view a reference relationship map. These maps show you where there are circular xrefs and data shortcut references (DREFs). A map can be saved to a PNG file which can be opened in an image viewer. Circular references must be resolved manually by opening the affected drawings and detaching the references so there is no longer a circular relationship between files.
    • To resolve a group of missing files, select the Name check box, click Resolve, and then specify the folder that contains the missing files.
Tip: Use the filter to narrow the list of missing files by State (Resolved or Unresolved) and Reference Type.

To resolve missing files individually, select the check box next to the file name and click Resolve. Then browse to the location of the missing file. Other files in the same location will also be resolved if possible.

Note: When multiple missing references have the same name, fixing one of them will automatically fix the broken paths inside all the other host drawings by pointing to the selected file.
Note: If the file selected to resolve a missing reference issue contains missing references within itself, new Missing References issues will be reported when going back to the issue list (the number is updated and the warning icon appears because the issues require resolution). The Missing References list needs to be opened again to continue fixing them.
    • To resolve related data issues, expand the list of related data issues, select the files to resolve, and specify a folder for them to be uploaded to within the Autodesk Docs target location.

You can select a target folder that represents the future state of the dataset in Autodesk Docs or create a new folder in which to store the referenced files.

    • To convert absolute paths to relative paths, expand the list of absolute paths, select the file paths to convert, anc click resolve.

The selected absolute paths are converted to a relative path that provides consistency for work in Docs.

    • To resolve long file path issues, use Windows Explorer to rename the file or move it to a shorter file path so that the destination path will be shorter than the 244 character limit.

If rearranging the folder structure is not sufficient to keep the path below the limit, consider choosing a shorter directory for the target Autodesk Docs location.

    • To resolve duplicated file name issues, use the Resolve button to specify a different location for the duplicated file or you can choose to not upload the file.
    • Unsupported files will not be uploaded. These issue types are informational only.
  10. Optionally, you can use the Back button to go back to the Select Data page without rescanning the dataset. Use this option if you need to review the list of files without making any changes. If you click the Back button, selecting Next will not re-check the data integrity for the selected dataset.
Note: If you change the selected/excluded files or folders and/or change the local and/or target Autodesk Docs locations, the data integrity will be re-checked after clicking Next to account for those changes.
  11. Optionally, you can use the Rescan button to go back to the Select Data page and rescan the local dataset. Use this option if you have made changes in the local dataset and need to consume the changes. If you click the Rescan button, selecting Next will re-check the data integrity again for the selected dataset.
  12. After resolving any issues that the tool has identified, click Next to review the list of files that will be uploaded.
Note: On the Review Uploading Progress page, files with an empty value in the "Destination" field will not be uploaded.
  13. If there is an existing file with the same filename in the Autodesk Docs location, you can select the Overwrite check box to overwrite the existing file. If you choose not to overwrite the file, the file will be skipped from the upload.
  14. Click Start Uploading to start uploading the files to Autodesk Docs.

When you click Start Uploading, the files will be copied to the Desktop Connector workspace. Do not close the app during this phase, because that will cause the migration to be incomplete.

When the copying phase finishes, the files will change their status to Uploading and Desktop Connector will start uploading the files to Autodesk Docs. As Desktop Connector is uploading files, the file status will change accordingly on the Review Uploading Progress page. At this point, you can close the app and review the status of the migration on the Desktop Connector home screen, or you can keep the app open and review the summary when the migration is completed.

When the migration task has completed, a summary page shows the status of the files.

During the entire process, a progress indicator on the top of the screen shows how many files are uploaded and are pending upload.

Once the migration finishes, you can export the results to a CSV file.

  15. Click Close to end the migration task.

A view of the files in Autodesk Docs is shown on the home page of the Autodesk DWG Migration for Docs app so you can further review the uploading results.

Note: Only files that can be opened in Civil 3D or AutoCAD (such as DWG and DWT) will be visible.
