Add polygons to a mesh automatically

You can add polygon topology to a selected area on the mesh using the Remesh command. This is useful when you want to add more detail to an area, but don't have enough components to work with. If enabling Mesh > Retopologize > Preprocess Mesh is not viable for your mesh (ie. not a very dense mesh or preprocessing is sub-optimal), using Remesh is the next course of action.

After adding detail, we recommend running Remesh on the entire mesh and then Retopo to return to uniform topology again.

To add detail to an area of the mesh

  1. Select components on the mesh to act as a center.
  2. In the Modeling menu set, select Mesh > Remesh.

This will add detail to the area according to the Remesh settings.

Note: If your scene file includes a Retopo node prior to Maya 2020, you should delete history on your mesh before performing another Remesh / Retopo.
