Structural Connection Code Checking

Learn how to verify the structural connection design, according to AISC or EC3 standards for applied forces and moments.

Some steel structural connection families have their own specific settings dialog where you change parameters, geometry and analysis information. See Modify Structural Connections.

The Code Checking tab is available is available in the steel connections settings dialog only for steel connection instances, and it is disabled at the steel connection type level.

To open the steel connection instance properties dialog:

  1. Select an instance of the connection.
  2. Check the Override by Instance parameter in the Properties palette.
  3. The Detailed Parameters Edit button will become available, as well as the (Modify Parameters) ribbon command in the Modify | Structural Connections tab Connection panel.
  4. Use any of the two options described at step 3 to access the specific connection settings dialog.
    Note: The type configuration of the connection is now ignored. Define a specific configuration for the selected instance and override the type configuration.

The Code Checking tab is now available in the Properties tab of the connection specific dialog.

The calculation results after code checking are briefly shown in this dialog, on the Code Checking tab. Connections can have one of three possible statuses: Not calculated, Checking failed or OK Checked.

Note: All structural connections have the two type properties: Approval Status and Code Checking Status. The Code Checking Status is automatically filled by the Code Checking engine.
Code Checking Settings
Option Description
The Check Button Verifies if the steel connection design resists the forces and moment values, according to the selected AISC or EC3 standard. A short version of the report will be displayed in the Code Checking window. This will only show the verifications that failed.
The Presize Button Launches an iterative process, where bolt diameter and plate and weld thickness values are automatically increased until a connection geometry that resists the applied forces is found. This option is available only for the AISC code checking module.
The Report Button Creates a document that displays all the connection verifications. To generate the report, you must first save the model. The report is automatically saved in the same location as the Revit project, in a folder with the same name as the project. You can view the report by clicking the Report button, after you reopen the model.

Forces and Moments used for Calculation

To insert forces and moments:
  • Use the Automatic values option (available only for the AISC module).

    For the AISC module, the forces and moments can be automatically generated, considering the steel connection should withstand more than the input element. The axial force, shear force and moment values are calculated considering the elastic or plastic capacities of the input section shape; these can be set using the Settings dialog that you launch by clicking on the Settings button in the Code Checking tab.
