Default Family Template File Invalid

If the path specified for the default path for family templates is missing, the Default Family Template File Invalid dialog displays. Specify a valid path and be sure family template files are located in the specified folder.

Define a path for default family templates:

  1. Open Revit.
  2. Click File tabOptions and click the File Locations tab.
Note: If the File tab is not visible, open a model or start a new one.
  3. Set the Default path for family template files to this location: C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\<product><version>\Family Templates\<language>.

    Example: C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\RVT 2023 Release\Family Templates\English_I\

Note: The Program Data folder may be hidden. You can display it by adjusting your Windows settings to display hidden folders.
  4. Optional: The default path for family template files can be set to any valid path for your network.
  5. Click OK.

Default family templates are part of the core content and are automatically included as part of the Revit installation process. If the core content is missing, you need to reinstall Revit.
