In the Reference Editor, reference nodes use an icon and color to indicate their state. The first (lower) chain link represents the smart reference and the second (upper), the source reference. Smart-source references have both chains colored.
These links of the icon can be one of the following colors:
When monitoring is off:
When monitoring is on:
In the following example, notice there is a green link and a white, along with green text in square brackets.
The first link is green, so the smart reference is up-to-date. The green text indicates an up-to-date smart reference VPB file. The second link is white, so there is no source reference; therefore, there is no white text within the brackets.
If monitoring was off, there would be white text within the square brackets.
In this next example, notice the link colors have changed and there are two file types.
Since the first link is red, the smart reference file is not found (missing). The red text indicates the unfound smart reference is a VPB file. The second link is green, so the source reference file is up-to-date. The green text indicates an up-to-date IAM source reference file.
Different File Name and Node Name
When you change the node name to something different than its file name, the content within the brackets changes. Instead of showing the file type, it displays the file name.
For example, the node name is Blade and file name is Blade.vpb. In the tree, the node will be labeled as Blade[vpb]. But, if you change the node name to Propeller, the node will be labeled as Propeller[Blade.vpb].

Modified Smart References That Are Unsaved
To identify a smart reference that has been modified, but has yet to be saved to file, look for an astrick before the reference name.
