Configure Open File Behaviors

Determine whether Inventor, AutoCAD, and Revit files are opened by the latest version, the last run version, or the version of the CAD Application that saved the file.

For example, if AutoCAD 2022 and AutoCAD 2023 are both installed on a machine, and you want files that were saved in AutoCAD 2022 to always open with AutoCAD 2023, you can configure Vault to always launch AutoCAD 2023 for all .dwg and .dxf files.

Vault supports 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 versions of CAD applications.

Configure Open File Behaviors

  1. In the Vault Client, select Tools > Options. 
  2. Next to Open file behavior settings click Settings.
  3. On the Open File Behaviors dialog, configure your open preferences for each CAD application.
    Note: Not all options are available for each CAD application. AutoCAD option applies to all AutoCAD tool sets for Architecture, MEP, Electrical, Mechanical, and so on.

    Inventor:

    • Last Run Version Opens the file with the last used version of Inventor.
      Note: This option is available only for Inventor files.
    • Default Uses the current settings in Vault for opening a specified CAD file. For example, if you have installed another application capable of opening Inventor files and configured Windows to use that application, Vault uses that same application to open Inventor files by default, too.

    AutoCAD, ACM , ACE C3D

    • Latest Version Opens the CAD file with the newest version of the CAD application.
    • Saved by Version Opens the CAD file with the version of the CAD application that was last used to save the file. If the specific application version in which the file was saved is not installed, the latest version of the application is used to open the file. If the respective CAD application is not available, then AutoCAD is used to open the .dwg file.
      Note: This option is not available in the Civil3D application.
    • Default Uses the current settings in Vault for opening a specified CAD file. For example, if you have installed another application capable of opening .dwg files and configured Windows to use that application, Vault uses that same application to open .dwg files by default, too.
  4. Click OK when you are finished to save your changes.
