Thermal Dissipation: Small Chips

In this step we apply a heat dissipation (in the form of a volumetric heat generation) to the six small chips on the PCB.

Note: Because the chips are modeled as parts, we must change the selection mode to Volume...

1. To change the selection mode, click Setup (tab) > Selection (panel) > Volume.

2. Hide the casing and the air parts by pressing Ctrl and middle clicking both. You should see the internal components of the device:

3. Select the six small chips by left clicking them.

4. Click Edit from the Boundary Conditions context panel:

5. Verify that the Type is Total Heat Generation, and the Unit is set to W (Watts).

6. On the Total Heat Generation row, enter 3.

7. Click Apply.

What it should look like...

8. To verify that the condition is correctly applied to the chips, check the Design Study bar and the colored stripe on the six chips.
