What Elements Can I Copy or Monitor?

The Copy/Monitor tool is designed for use with important elements of a building model to streamline coordination and collaboration on a project that involves multiple teams.

Copy/Monitor Elements

Use the Copy/Monitor tool to monitor changes to the types of elements listed below. In most cases, instance properties are copied when an element is copy/monitored, any differences are noted.

• Levels
  • These instance properties are not copied:
    • Story Above
    • Computation Height
    • Structural
  • If a level is assigned to a scope box, the scope box will be copied along with the level element. If a scope box with the same name already exists in the model, the scope box will not be copied when the level is copied, but the level will be assigned to the scope box.
• Grids (but not multi-segment grids)
  • If a grid is assigned to a scope box, the scope box will be copied along with the grid element. If a scope box with the same name already exists in the model, the scope box will not be copied when the grid is copied, but the grid will be assigned to the scope box.
• Columns (but not slanted columns)
  • These instance properties are not copied:
    • Top Connection
    • Base Connection
  • Base/Top constraints and Base/Top offsets may not have matching values if the target model does not contain the corresponding levels, but the overall geometry will be maintained when copied.
• Walls
  • Base/Top constraints and Base/Top offsets may not have matching values if the target model does not contain the corresponding levels, but the overall geometry will be maintained when copied.
  • When monitoring walls, you can specify whether to monitor openings, including openings for doors and windows.
• Floors
  • This instance property is not copied:
    • Structural
  • Level and Height Offset From Level may not have matching values if the target model does not contain the corresponding levels, but the overall geometry will be maintained when copied.
  • When monitoring floors, you can specify whether to monitor floor inserts and openings, such as shafts.
• Openings
  • Openings are copied as part of the host if selected in the Copy/Monitor Options. See: Specify Options for Copy/Monitor.
  • Base/Top constraints and Base/Top offsets for openings may not have matching values if the target model does not contain the corresponding levels, but the overall geometry will be maintained when copied.
• MEP Fixtures
  • Special consideration needs to be made when using copy/monitor with MEP fixtures. See: Copying MEP Fixtures.

Phasing

When you use Copy/Monitor to copy an element from a linked model to the current model, the Phase Created property for the copied element is assigned to the Phase value for the current view. It does not inherit the phase assigned to the original element in the linked model. The Phase Demolished property is set to None. See also Map Phases Between Linked Models.

Custom Parameters

Any custom instance parameters that have been added to elements that are copy/monitored will not be included in the copied element.

Other Considerations

The Copy/Monitor tool is not intended to be used with the following:

• Multi-segment grids
• Slanted columns
• In-place elements
