Video: Use a Revit Model in InfraWorks

Import a Revit model into InfraWorks for presentation and analysis in a larger context.

This video demonstrates the following:

  1. Define the geographic location of a Revit model and position the survey point to a matching point.
  2. Create a named 3D view for transfer into InfraWorks and turn off category visibility as required.
  3. Import the file into InfraWorks.
  4. Make minor adjustments to the position of the Revit model and reload changed geometry
Note: This video was recorded using Revit 2017. When using a newer software release, you may notice differences in functionality and user interface.

To see a Revit model in a larger context, the model can be imported into an InfraWorks model for further analysis and presentation. The Revit geometry is imported and placed into position in the InfraWorks model. To get the best results when importing, prepare the Revit model first.

InfraWorks uses the default 3D view in Revit to establish the imported geometry. Use visibility and graphics overrides to turn off elements and categories you do not want to show when imported to InfraWorks. For example, the topography and the planting categories are turned off in Revit because they are not needed in the InfraWorks model. When you are finished, save the Revit project.

In InfraWorks, on the manage tab, click Data Sources to import your Revit file. In the Data Sources panel, click Add File Data Source and select Autodesk Revit from the list. Navigate to your project and follow the prompts to send the file to Autodesk® A360 for processing. When the Revit project is added, it displays in the buildings data source list.

When the data source is done processing, select it and right-click, and select Configure. In the Configure dialog, click interactive placement. Position the model in the InfraWorks model exact positioning is not possible, get close to the final position and double click to place. In the configure dialog, click Close and Refresh. Minor adjustments will be required. Select the imported geometry and use the controls to adjust the position of the model.

To see changes made in Revit to the model after it has been added to InfraWorks, save the Revit model to the original location. In InfraWorks, right-click the project in the Data Sources panel, and select reimport. This action updates the geometry of the project in the InfraWorks model.
