Serious Error when Opening a Revit Project, a View, or Reloading a Link

You may encounter a serious error when opening a Revit project, certain views or reloading a link when the linked files in the project have errors that prevent file to be opened, or when Revit is not updated to the latest version.

Solution

Initial items to check:
Additional items to check for Workshared models:
  1. Open the model with all worksets closed:
    1. Set the worksets option to Specify when opening the model (for cloud models, use the ... to access the Specify option).
    2. Select all of the worksets in the Worksets dialog box (Ctrl +A).
    3. Click Close to close the worksets.
    4. Click OK.
  2. If the model opens with the worksets closed, turn worksets back on to see if one or more of the worksets are associated with the error. Pay particular attention to worksets that contain linked files (if such worksets have been created in the model).

If the error appears to be caused by linked models, go through the following steps:

    1. Open the Manage Links dialog box.
    2. Unload the problematic links.
    3. Confirm that the model opens without error when the links are unloaded.
    4. Reload the links to find the specific ones causing the error.
    5. Open the models causing the error, to check for errors or warnings encountered when opening the linked model directly.
  3. If the model does not open with all worksets closed, detach the model from Central and resave it as a new central.

If none of the above helps, reinstall Revit.
