If the content you are creating is a part, you must specify what properties it updates in the BOM.
You can do this creating Family Table columns that map to BOM component properties. Because each row in the Family Table represents a member of the part family, potentially each member can have unique component property values. You can specify the value as an expression or manually enter the value for each row.
For columns that must have the same value across all rows (for example, Material) you can even use global columns for component properties such as material that typically do not change across rows.
For example, in the standard parts library, steel shapes have their length automatically added to its NAME component property. Hence in the Family Table when the length changes the BOM reflects the new length in the NAME component property.
When you create a new view, AutoCAD Mechanical toolset automatically adds a part reference at the base point of the view. By default balloon leaders point to the location of the part reference icon (). Hence if you want the balloon leader to point to a different location, you must move the icon to the desired location and constrain it.
When you create a new part from scratch, the part reference icon () is not inserted by default. You use the AMCPARTREF command to explicitly insert a part reference.
Every view of a part must contain a part reference.
