To use a plane in an RPS alignment

When you use a plane as the first item in an RPS alignment, its orientation locks two rotation axes. You can also use the plane normal to lock a translation axis.

To create an RPS alignment using a plane:

  1. Click Hometab > Create panel > Alignment > RPS Alignment to display the RPS Alignment Definition dialog.
  2. Enter a Name for the alignment.
  3. Select the plane in the left drop-down list, or click and select the feature in the CAD view. For example:

This locks the two rotation axes determined by the orientation of the plane.

  4. Choose an option in the right drop-down list. Select:
    • Lock Position to fix the orientation of the plane and lock the plane in position along its normal.
    • Lock Direction to fix the orientation of the plane. This locks two rotation axes, but leaves the position free to move along the axis normal to the plane.
  5. Add the remaining constraining items to the alignment.
  6. When you have selected all the items for the alignment, click OK to save your changes and close the dialog.
