Video: Use Fill Patterns

Apply fill patterns to material definitions, filled regions, or as a visibility and graphic override.

This video demonstrates the following:

  1. Modify fill patterns used for materials.
  2. Edit the Type properties of Filled Regions.
  3. Apply fill patterns as visibility and graphic overrides.
Note: This video was recorded using Revit 2019. When using a newer software release, you may notice differences in functionality and user interface.

Fill patterns are set in the graphic properties of a material definition. They are also used in the definition of a filled region, and are set as part of a visibility and graphic override. When you define a fill pattern for any of these elements, you can specify one fill pattern and color for the foreground, and another fill pattern and color for the background.

For example, you want to set the surface pattern of the concrete wall to have lines indicating form work and a pattern to indicate that the wall is concrete. In the Type Properties dialog for the wall, edit the structure. Click the material to open the Material Browser.

On the Graphics tab of the Material Browser, you see the foreground and background settings for the surface pattern of the material. Set the foreground to use a pattern indicating form work, and then set the background to use a concrete fill pattern. Change the color of the background to use a gray color. Click OK in all dialog boxes, and see the double pattern applied to the wall.

When you define a filled region type, the controls for the background and foreground fill patterns and colors are similar to those in the Material Browser.

A visibility and graphic override also has similar controls for the fill pattern overrides. When an override is applied, the indicator is split into two areas, one indicating the override applied to the foreground and the other for the override applied to the background.

Foreground and background patterns allow flexibility in the graphic representation of your models to help you present and communicate your designs effectively.
