Part 5: Create a Roof

In this exercise, you create a flat roof using the footprint of the exterior walls and a sloped roof with an overhang at the entry.

Draw the Roof

  1. Open project GSG_05_add_roof.rvt.
  2. Open the 02 - Lower Parapet floor plan.
  3. Click Architecture tabRoof drop-down (Roof by Footprint).
  4. Create a sloped roof with an overhang:
    1. On the Draw panel, click (Pick Walls).
    2. On the Options Bar, for Overhang, enter 600, and select Defines slope.
    3. In the drawing area, highlight an entry wall. When a dashed line is displayed on the exterior of the wall, press Tab to select the chain of walls, and click to place the roof lines.
    4. On the Properties palette, set the Base Level to 03 - Upper Parapet.
    5. On the Mode panel, click (Finish) to place the roof.
    6. Click Modify to end the command.
  5. Draw a flat roof:
    1. On the Properties palette, set the Underlay value to 01 - Store Floor.
    2. Click Architecture tabRoof drop-down (Roof by Footprint).
    3. On the Draw panel, click (Pick Walls).
    4. On the Options Bar, set overhang to 0 and clear Defines slope.
    5. On the Properties palette, set Base Offset from Level to -750.
    6. In the drawing area, do the following:
      1. Highlight an exterior wall.
      2. Press Tab to select the chain of walls.
      3. Click to place the roof lines.
      4. On the Mode panel, click (Finish).

Attach Walls to the Roof

  1. On the Quick Access Toolbar, click (Default 3D View).

    Notice that the interior walls extend through the roof.

  2. Position the cursor over an interior wall and click to select the wall.
  3. Right-click and choose Select all instancesVisible in view to select all interior walls.
  4. Click Modify | Walls tabModify Wall panel (Attach Top/Base).
  5. Click to select the flat roof.

    Notice that the walls no longer extend through the roof.
