Sustainability Analysis

The sustainability analysis functionality in InfoWorks WS allows energy losses in the network (due to friction and minor losses in pipes, losses at control valves and losses at customer taps) to be calculated as a Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) equivalent.

For pumping stations a carbon dioxide equivalent of pump energy usage is also calculated.

The results of the analysis can be used to review and manage energy losses through the network.

Setting Sustainability Parameters

In order to carry out sustainability calculations, CO₂ conversion factors are set in an Energy CO2 Factors Data object. Different conversion factor regimes can be set up for use in calculating network losses or for use with different pumping stations.

To assign a conversion regime to a pumping station, set the Energy CO2 Factor regime field in the Pumping Station Parameters Page of the Pumping Station Property Sheet.

Sustainability Simulations

By default, sustainability calculations are not carried out during a simulation.

To include sustainability calculations in a run:

1. Set up the simulation as normal as described in Creating and Scheduling a Run.
2. Check the Sustainability (CO2) option on the Schedule Hydraulic Run View. The Sustainability Options dialog is displayed automatically when this option is first selected. The dialog can also be opened by using the Sustainability Options button when the Sustainability box is checked.
3. Set parameters on the Sustainability Options dialog:
   • Select an Energy CO2 Factors data item
   • Select a default regime. This regime will be used to calculate network energy losses as a CO₂ equivalent and as a default for any pumping station that does not already have a regime specified.
4. Run the simulation as normal.

Additional energy loss and carbon dioxide equivalent loss results become available when a simulation has been carried out with the Sustainability (CO2) option checked.
