Each Revit family type loaded into the project can have a Twinmotion asset assigned. This assignment will be used when the Revit model is imported or added as a Direct Link in Twinmotion. Use this feature to automatically substitute Revit family geometry with similar assets from the Twinmotion library.
To enable this feature, under the View tab, Presentation panel, go to Twinmotion
Substitution Settings. Check
Enable Twinmotion Substitution for compatible Revit family categories.
Once substitution is enabled for the Revit model, you can assign a Twinmotion asset for each family type:
When installing Twinmotion 2023.2 or later, a static and dynamic substitution library is also installed. These libraries are generated by Twinmotion and used by Revit to populate the list of assets and thumbnails available in the Substitution dialog.
Revit 2025.2 or later sets the substitution library path to the applicable installed compatible version of Twinmotion.
If you need to browse to a different library, for example to a different Twinmotion version, you can navigate to the directory from the Twinmotion Substitution Settings dialog and specify the desired static substitution library.
The dynamic substitution library contains any additional Twinmotion assets downloaded on the workstation. Revit automatically references the dynamic substitution library associated to the same version of Twinmotion used by the Open in Twinmotion command.
Starting with Revit 2026, you can edit the dynamic substitution path for storing the downloaded assets:
The general direction mapping behavior, when applicable, between a Revit family to a Twinmotion asset is the family Front direction to the Twinmotion asset front. In the following example, an arrow extrusion is created facing the family Front direction:
The general origin mapping behavior, when applicable, uses the Revit family origin as the center of the geometry, which is mapped to the center of the Twinmotion asset. In the following example, the X at the center of the arrow geometry represents the family origin:
