Numbering Options

This is the main dialog that lets you manage numbering templates - you can create new templates, duplicate existing ones, enable or disable them, and adjust their priority by moving them up or down (when two templates write to the same parameter, the one higher in the list takes precedence).

Define a numbering template

  1. In the Manage tab Settings panel, click (Numbering).
  2. In the Numbering Options dialog, click "+" to add a template.
  3. Assign a name and click OK.
  4. Select a filter from the list of filters in the project or click the button next to the drop-down to open the filters dialog.
  5. Here you can create a filter, for the category you want to number. You can include criteria based on the element parameters to further refine the scope. Click OK to go back to Numbering Options.
  6. Select the filter from the list.
  7. Select a numbering parameter. This is common between the filter categories. You can click the Project parameters button to open the Project parameters dialog and define a new parameter.
Note: The output parameter is a built ‑in or shared parameter, common to the filter categories, instance ‑based, editable, unit type - text and set as "can vary by group instance".
  8. Click Apply to number the elements in scope.

The top of the dialog displays the status of the selected template and how many elements it is numbering.

Note: When you select an element that is numbered by one or more templates, a "#" button appears in the Properties palette next to the parameter used as the output by each template.

Click this button to open the Numbering Template dialog, which lists all templates that are numbering the selected element.

For each template, you can click Edit in the Number Sequence column to open the Number Sequence dialog.

Note: Disabling or removing a template preserves the existing numbers as simple text, so historical drawings remain consistent.

Transfer templates to other projects

You can use transfer project standards to transfer numbering templates between projects.

  1. In the Manage tab Settings panel, click (Transfer Project Standards).
  2. In the copy from drop-down menu, select the project you want to copy the template from (in your current Revit session).
  3. Click check none, to uncheck all items.
  4. Scroll down and check the box next to Numbering Templates, and click OK.
