Partitioning and Numbering Sequences

The elements in scope (selected by the filter) are numbered within assigned partitions.

These are defined based on the values of the parameters selected in the partitioning dialog. If partitions are not defined or the specified criteria are not met (e.g., elements don't have values for the parameters used for defining partitions) all elements are numbered within the same default partition called <Unassigned>.

Frequently, rooms are partitioned by level, or the room number serves as the partition when assigning numbers to doors according to the room they access.

Defining numbering partitions

  1. To define partitions, click Edit next to Partitioning, in the Numbering Options dialog. This opens the Partitioning dialog.
Note: Here, you can select one or more parameters to define the numbering partitions. Elements with identical parameter values are assigned to the same partition, and their numbers become part of the same sequence.
  2. Check the box next to Partitioning by parameter value.
  3. Click in the Select parameters from drop-down and select the Category from which you want to add parameters.
Note: If the filter used for the numbering template is selecting multiple categories, options in the drop-down menu include <Common> - parameters that are common to all categories, <All> - to show all parameters from all categories and the list of categories. For some element categories, this drop-down also shows associated categories (e.g., To Room, From Room for Doors).
  4. Select a parameter from the list on the left and click the arrow to add it to the right. Alternatively, you can double-click parameters on the left column to add to the right.
  5. To remove parameters from partitioning, with a parameter selected in the right column, click the arrow pointing left.
  6. Click OK to accept changes and go back to Numbering Options.

Modifying Numbering Sequences

To open the dialog, click Number Sequence in the Numbering Options dialog. Alternatively, you can click the "#" button in the properties palette next to the numbering parameter for each numbered element and click Edit in the Number Sequence column for the desired template.

Search - Use this to filter the partitions that are displayed in the table.

Partition - Lists the names of the numbering sequences identified for this template. For numbered elements whose partitions have not been determined, the field displays <Unassigned>. This may occur if no partitioning criteria have been defined for the template, or if the elements do not have values for the parameters specified as partitioning criteria.

If the parameter used for partitioning is editable, you can directly input the name in the partition field. This will apply for all elements that are numbered and assigned to that partition. It is important to note that you can only change multiple partition names at one time if the new names are not used (unique) or are used but not being changed (merged). For example, if you have partitions A, B, and C:
You can rename partitions
A to B, C to D A gets merged with B, C gets renamed to D
A to D, B to D A and B are merged into the new partition D
A to D, B to E, C to F A, B, and C are all given new unique partition names
A to C, B to C A and B are merged into C
You cannot rename partitions
A to B, B to E A is renamed to B, but B is also being renamed
A to B, B to A A and B are target names but they are also being renamed
A to C, B to C, C to D A and B are merged into C but C is also being renamed
A to B, B to C, C to A A, B, and C are being merged but the target partitions are also being renamed/merged

Starting Value - Specifies the first number for the numbered elements in that partition.

In Use - Displays the current numerical range for the numbered elements in the partition. The range highlights with an asterisk when one or more gaps exist in the sequence.

Remove Gaps - Becomes active when one or more gaps exists in a sequence. You can select multiple rows (partitions) that contain gaps and click Remove Gaps.

Count - Represents the total unique numbers assigned in that partition. If matching is enabled, this number will be lower than the total number of elements, as some elements will match and get the same number.
