Element Matching for Numbering Templates

Matching determines which elements are treated as identical for numbering. You can use geometry matching, parametric matching or a combination of the two.

Some element categories in Revit have a default matching, instead of geometry matching, which can be combined with parameter matching. Examples of such elements include Assemblies and Structural Reinforcement. Other categories like Detail Items only support parametric matching.

Matching by element geometry

  1. To enable matching by geometry, click Edit next to Element matching, in the Numbering Options dialog. This opens the Element Matching Rules dialog.
Note: Here, you can choose if elements should be matched based on their geometry or a combination of geometry and values of the selected parameters. No matching means each element gets a unique number.
  2. Check the box next to Matching by element geometry.
  3. Click OK to accept changes and go back to Numbering Options.

Matching by parameter value

  1. In the same dialog, check the box next to Matching by parameter values.
  2. Click in the Select parameters from drop-down and select the Category from which you want to add parameters.
Note: If the filter used for the numbering templates is selecting multiple categories, options in the drop-down menu include <Common> - parameters that are common to all categories, <All> - to show all parameters from all categories. For some element categories, this drop-down also shows associated categories (e.g., To Room, From Room for Doors).
  3. Select a parameter from the list on the left and click the arrow to add it to the right. Alternatively, you can double-click parameters on the left column to add to the right.
  4. To remove parameters from matching, with a parameter selected in the right column, click the arrow pointing left.
  5. Click OK to accept changes and go back to Numbering Options.
  6. Click Apply or OK in the Numbering Options dialog to apply the template.
