Break the link between an external component and the assembly

Learn how to use the Break Link command to remove the associative link between an external component and the assembly that references it in Fusion.

Break the component's associativity with the original design

  1. Open the design that contains the assembly.
  2. In the Browser, locate the external component.
  3. Right-click the component.
  4. Select Break Link break link icon.
  5. If the external component contains external subcomponents, a Break Link dialog displays. Select an option:
    • Include subcomponents: Breaks the link between any subcomponents and the assembly, in addition to the selected external component.
    • Component only: Only breaks the link between the selected external component and the assembly. External subcomponents maintain their associative links.

The associative link between the external component and the assembly is broken. The component is converted to an internal component, and any changes to it will only affect the local assembly.

Note: If the external component contained Assembly Contexts, any bodies and features are placed in their respective folders within the converted internal component.
