Edit In Place preferences

Set preferences to control assembly reference behavior during Edit In Place sessions in Fusion.

Set the default Edit In Place behavior

Set whether new Edit In Place sessions default to Associative or Non-associative.

1. In the top-right corner, on the Application bar, click My Profile.

2. Select Preferences.

3. In the left panel, navigate to General > Design > Assembly and Hybrid Designs.

4. Under Assembly component in-place edit, open the Default Edit-in-Place behavior dropdown, then select an option:

   • Associative: Lets you reference other components in the assembly by default.
   • Non-associative: Prevents references to other components by default.

5. Click OK.

New Edit In Place sessions use the behavior you selected.

Set the assembly reference type

Set the Assembly reference type preference to control how new assembly references track geometry changes in Fusion. The type also decides whether Fusion reserves the root assembly when you edit in place.

1. In the top-right corner, on the Application bar, click My Profile.

2. Select Preferences.

3. In the left panel, navigate to General > Design > Assembly and Hybrid Designs.

4. Under Assembly component in-place edit, open the Assembly reference type dropdown, then select an option:

   • Timeless: References the assembly's most current version. Any changes made to the referenced geometry in the assembly also update in the external component's reference. Fusion doesn't reserve the root assembly when you create or edit a timeless reference.
   • Timeline-based context: References geometry and creates an assembly context feature at a specific point in the assembly's timeline. Any changes to the geometry after the feature don't affect the reference. Fusion reserves the root assembly when you create or edit a timeline-based context.

5. Click OK.

The preference is set according to your selection.
