Avoid collisions when drilling holes
Collision avoidance for drilling helps produce safer toolpaths by reducing the chances of collisions:
- To avoid collisions between the shaft or holder and the part, use the Shaft & Holder settings on the Tool tab.
- To avoid collisions between the cutting portion of the tool and the part when performing link moves, use the Retraction Policy settings on the Linking tab.
Using collision avoidance for drilling
In the Manufacture workspace toolbar, select Milling > Drilling > Drill. The Drill dialog appears.
On the Tool tab, select the Shaft & Holder checkbox.
From the Shaft and Holder Mode drop-down menu, select what to do when there is a possible collision between the shaft or holder and the part during cutting moves. For example:
- Skip colliding holes removes holes where a collision has been detected.
- Trimmed keeps the safe portion of each cut and trims away the colliding portion. Use Remaining holes from operation in Selection Mode on a follow-up operation to finish partially machined holes with a longer tool. For more information, see the Drill reference.
Enter a Shaft Clearance value.
Enter a Holder Clearance value.
On the Linking tab, verify that the Ignore Gouges checkbox is deselected. The Retraction Policy and Safe Distance settings appear.
Important: It is useful to have Ignore Gouges selected in the initial programming stage to speed up calculation times. But before finalizing the toolpath, it is recommended to deselect this option and check for gouges.
From the Retraction Policy drop-down menu, select Avoid Collisions.

Specify a Safe Distance to keep the tool away from the part's surfaces during link moves.

Program the remainder of the drilling operation then click OK.
