Create a datum identifier

A Datum Identifier (datum ID) symbol identifies a datum feature for a feature control frame symbol.

Create a Datum Identifier

  1. Select Symbols > Datum Identifier datum identifier icon.

  2. Select the edge of an object.

  3. Click the location of the start point.

    Note: Specify a start point within the extents of the selected edge to create a leader extending straight from the edge. Or, select a start point beyond the extents of the edge to create a surface extension.

  4. Click again to specify the next point.

  5. Do one of the following:

    • Click the check mark or press Enter to place the datum ID.
    • Click to place the datum ID with a second leader segment.

In the Datum Identifier dialog, you can enter text in the Identifier field to modify the ID.

Note: When using the ISO standard, you can add a datum note and thread note. Enter your own alphanumeric characters, or use the drop-down list to select from the available Symbol palette.

Create a Surface Identification Leader

Note: Surface identification is available only for the ISO standard.
  1. Select Symbols > Datum Identifier datum identifier icon.

  2. Select the edge of an object.

  3. Right-click to activate the Marking Menu, and then select Surface.

  4. Click the location of the start point.

  5. Click the location of the next point, and then place the datum ID leader.

  6. Do one of the following:

    • Click the check mark or press Enter to place the datum ID.
    • Click to place the datum ID with a second leader segment.
Note: You can change the surface symbol to refer to the near side or the far side of the object by using the Area field in the dialog.

Edit a Datum Identifier

  1. Double-click an existing datum ID.

    The Datum Identifier dialog displays.

  2. Modify the identifier.

  3. Click Close.

Move a Datum Identifier

  1. Click an existing datum ID.
  2. Use the gray grips to move it.
