You can import topology changes made in Maya or other applications to seamlessly update the topology of the active mesh in your Mudbox scene, even midstream in your production.
The following example workflow starts by exporting a base mesh from Mudbox, editing the mesh in another application, then importing the updated topology back into Mudbox.
You can also start by importing any arbitrary new topology from another application, then transferring any properties you want from the existing active mesh onto the new topology.
To import topology changes
- (Optional) Export a base mesh from Mudbox as an .obj or .fbx file to your 3D modeling application. (For example, use File > Send to Maya.) Make any topology changes in your modeling application.
- Select File > Import from the main menu bar in Mudbox, then navigate to select the .obj or .fbx file with updated topology.
Tip: If working with Maya, use File > Export Selected to Mudbox instead, then click Update Active Object in the Send To Mudbox window as your file loads in Mudbox. This automatically imports the new topology for the active object.
The imported mesh loads.
- Transfer properties from a mesh in your Mudbox scene to the imported mesh with updated topology. See Transfer properties between meshes.
- (Optional) To delete the original mesh (if it is no longer needed) select the mesh in the Object List and press Delete.
