Section Dialog: Properties of Joists / Joists Girders

Note: To create joists or joist girders, use the United States regional settings

Database Sections

On this tab, you can select a section from a database.

Properties Description
Available section shapes. Click:
  • to define a joist or a joist girder
  • to define a joist
  • to define a joist girder.
Selecting an icon updates items on the Family list.
Material Material associated with a section. Depends on the section type. The Material list displays a list of materials from databases set for your project in the Job Preferences dialog.
Gamma angle It is a rotation angle that you assign to the section of a linear element. Not available for joists and joist girders.
Label Name of a section.
Color Color for displaying a section.
Database The list includes the databases set for your project, in the same order as in the Job Preferences dialog.
Family The list displays section families. You can filter it by selecting one of the icons.
Section Section from the database.
Parameter preview Click the button to open the Joists dialog. There you can select a method of steel design according to the AISC code, and specify a span length. Also, you can view values of other properties. They are calculated automatically based on a selected method of steel design and a span length.
Max. deflection Maximum allowable deflection of a joist or joist girder, expressed a fraction of the span. Select L/360 or L/240 from the list.

Joists Dialog

Click Parameter Preview button in the Sections dialog, on the Database tab. This dialog is available if you select the section type: Joist / Joist Girder.

Parameters according to the code Select the ASD or LRFD method of steel design according to the AISC code.
ASD Allowable Stress Design method
LRFD Load and Resistance Factor Design method
Span length Select a value of joist span from the list.
Joist properties You cannot edit the values of these properties. They are calculated automatically based on a selected method of steel design and a span length.

Parametric Sections

On this tab, you can define a section by specifying section dimensions.

Material Material associated with a section. Depends on the section type. The Material list displays a list of materials from databases set for your project in the Job Preferences dialog.
Gamma angle It is a rotation angle that you assign to the section of a linear element. Not available for joists and joist girders.
Label Name of a section. You can use a standard label assigned automatically.
Color Color for displaying a section.
Standard Select it to define a joist by specifying the total load and live load acting on it.
Envelope Select it to define a joist by specifying the max. bending moment and max. shear force.
Joist Girder Select it to define a joist girder by specifying number of spaces and the max. concentrated load acting on each panel (Force P).
Max. deflection Maximum allowable deflection of a joist or joist girder, expressed a fraction of the span. Select L/360 or L/240 from the list.
Parameters (ASD) Some edit fields in this panel are updated after you select one of the definition options: Standard, or Envelope, or Joist Girder. Apart from parameters specific to the definition option, enter: length, weight, and height of a joist or joist girder.
IY Moment of inertia. Deselect the check box to specify the moment of inertia. If you select the check box, the edit filed is inactive.
