About Autodesk Revit Interoperability

Autodesk Revit Interoperability lets you use your Autodesk Revit files with 3ds Max. This lets you include metadata as well as geometry, material, and lighting information.

Importing your Revit files in 3ds Max gives you the best of both worlds. You can model in Revit, and then use 3ds Max to tweak the models, add interactivity, or create a photorealistic rendering.

Beginning with 3ds Max 2023, Revit Interoperability must be installed in order to import Revit files. The On-Demand installer will install Revit Interoperability when attempting to import a Revit file for the first time on a machine (see On-Demand Installation for Revit and Inventor imports for more details). You may also configure a deployment to install 3ds Max and Revit Interoperability simultaneously (see Create deployments from Autodesk Account for more details).

For 3ds Max versions 2023 and under, if the Revit file you are importing is from a version of Revit prior to the version of 3ds Max you are using, 3ds Max will automatically upgrade the file to the appropriate version. However, this is often quite a lengthy process. To avoid upgrading the RVT file, you must ensure that the 3ds Max version corresponding to the RVT file version has already been installed. For example, you can avoid the file upgrade when importing a RVT 2022 file into 3ds Max 2023, by first installing 3ds Max 2022.

For 3ds Max versions 2026 and above, if the Revit file you are importing is from 2024 or earlier, the file upgrade is required and cannot be avoided.
