Block attributes do not display as expected in AutoCAD products

Technical Support

Issue:

When viewing a block that contains attributes in AutoCAD, the attributes are not displayed as expected.
  • The attributes might appear correctly inside Block Editor, but not display correctly in Model space and paper space.
  • The attributes may only show as grips in block editor without text.
  • An old state of attribute might be displayed, but not updated to the latest editing session or latest redefining of the block.
  • This may occur in some files, all files, or only in files opened on one system or installation.

Causes:

  • Attribute display is turned off.
  • 3rd party add-on or customization.
  • The affected attributes are invisible.
  • The block is redefined.
  • The block was inserted as an external reference.
  • The file is corrupted.
  • The AutoCAD user profile is corrupted.

Solution:

Try the following in order:

Attribute display turned off

On the command line in AutoCAD, type ATTDISP and set it to Normal or even On.

Attribute defined without Default value

The newly created attribute was created without any Default value that should initially be displayed. Edit the attribute in the Block to have a Default value.

  1. Right-click the Block and choose Block Editor.
  2. In Block Edit mode, double-click the attribute.
  3. In the dialog box for Edit Attribute Definition, enter the desired Default vale and confirm with OK.
  4. Close the Block Editor and save the changes.
  5. Also use the ATTSYNC command to sync the changes regarding the attribute to already place instances of the block.

Recently edited blocks

Update the block reference by doing either of the following:

  • Enter BATTMAN and Sync the block references.
  • Enter the ATTSYNC command and choose the blocks to update.

Invisible attributes

Change the visibility of the attributes in Properties.

  1. Right-click the block and choose Block Editor.
  2. Select the attributes (use the QSELECT command if there are many).
  3. In the Properties window, change Invisible to No.
  4. Close the Block Editor and save the block.
  5. Enter the ATTSYNC command and choose the edited block.
