Exercise 16: Use Themes

Theme terrain by elevation. Theme roads by number of lanes.

To theme terrain by elevation

  1. Click .
  2. To add a new theme, click .
  3. In the Theme Properties dialog box, enter a name for the theme.
  4. Leave the Analysis Type set to Elevation, and specify the Minimum Value and Maximum Value for the theme.

    These values are in the model's unit of measurement, and should reflect the minimum and maximum elevations in your model.

  5. If necessary, change the Distribution Method and Number of Rules.
  6. Click OK.
  7. To see the entire model, click .
    Note: the home button does not appear on the application screen until you mouse over the View Cube.

To theme roads by number of Lanes Forward

  1. Click .
  2. To add a new theme, click .
  3. In the Theme Properties dialog box, enter a name for the theme.
  4. For Feature Class, select Roads.
  5. For Property, select Lanes Forward.

    The Minimum Value and Maximum Value are displayed automatically, based on the data for this feature class.

  6. If necessary, change the Distribution Method.
  7. For Number of Rules, specify the same number as the Maximum Value.

    That will display a separate theme entry for each possible Lanes Forward value.

  8. If desired, change the Color Range settings.
  9. Click OK.
  10. To see the results, close or resize the Themes window.
