The Layer List, available from the Layers toolbar, displays layer names and their properties. You can control the properties of layers by clicking the property icons. You can make a layer current by simply selecting it from the list.
The controls available in the Layer List are a subset of the controls available on the Layer Properties dialog. You can also change these settings with the Layer Explorer dialog.
To make a layer current:
The layer list closes with the layer you clicked visible and highlighted. It is now the current layer.
To change objects' layer:

You can change the following properties from the layer list: Hide/Unhide, Freeze/Unfreeze, Renderable/Non-renderable, and Color.
The properties available on the layer list for each layer are, from left to right: Hide/Unhide toggle, Freeze/Unfreeze toggle, Renderable/Non-renderable toggle, Color swatch, and active layer (name). To change a toggle setting, click it in the layer list. To change a layer's color, click the color swatch and then choose a new color from the Layer Color dialog. To activate a layer, making it the current layer, click its name in the list. Objects that you create are assigned automatically to the current layer.
