To add culverts to a design road

Use Add Culverts to add one or more culverts to a design road, wherever streams cross the road. Examine and modify a proposed culvert solution.

To add a culvert where a watershed analysis does not identify a watershed for a portion of a road, see To add a culvert manually.

  1. Use watershed analysis to identify where streams cross a road.

For more information, see To analyze watersheds from an outlet point or a design road.

Drainage Design displays a pin at each crossing location.

  2. Click the design road to select it. Select in the Utility Bar to enter Edit mode.
  3. Right-click the selected design road and choose Add Culverts from the context menu.

Drainage Design adds a culvert at each stream crossing as follows:

    • Places culverts at the intersection of the toe of the roadway slopes.
    • Utilizes watershed flow (Q100) and roadway elevation at the crossing.
    • Utilizes a maximum Headwater Depth to Diameter (HW/D) ratio of 1.5:1 to size the culvert barrel.
  4. Examine and modify the culvert solution as needed.
Note: A watershed analysis may not catch all of the stream flows crossing a design road. Supplement automatic placement of culverts using the Culverts tool to add a culvert manually.
