To select an Area of Interest in Model Builder

Select an area of interest (AOI) in the Model Builder to build a high quality model of that location. Navigation in the Model Builder is similar to most browser-based mapping applications.

1. Search

Enter a desired location into the search bar, such as "San Francisco, California" or "One Market St., San Francisco" to zoom to that location on the map. You can also input longitudinal and latitudinal coordinates such as "37.793369,-122.394203" into the search bar.

2. Compass
Click any of the arrows in the compass to pan that direction in the map.
Note: To rotate the view, select Bird's Eye view mode and zoom in to the desired location until the compass displays two additional rotation arrows .
3. Zoom In/Out
  • Click the icons to zoom in or out.
  • Hover over the icons until the zoom slider appears. Drag the slider up or down to zoom in or zoom out in increments.
  • Manually zoom in/out using the mouse scroll wheel.
  • Shift-click + drag the cursor to draw a rectangular area on the map. Release the mouse button and the map will zoom to the selected area.
4. Map View Style
  • Road view provides a standard road map.
  • Automatic view switches to the optimal map style as you zoom in/out.
  • Bird's Eye view can provide a better angle for aerial imagery, and can display labels and angled views.
  • Note: The Model Builder map view setting is a visual aid for navigation purposes only, and has no effect on the models that are generated by Model Builder. For example, if a user is in Road map view when selecting an Area of Interest (AOI) and then creates a model with the Model Builder, the resulting model will still include aerial imagery.
5. Select Area of Interest
  • Click to select the current map extent.
  • Click to draw a rectangular AOI on the map.
  • Click to draw a polygonal AOI on the map.
  • To modify an AOI, hover over the boundary box and click any of the manipulators at each corner, then drag in the desired direction.
  • Note: The Model Builder supports areas up to 150 sq. km.
