Export to DGN

Export a single view or multiple views and sheets to DGN format.

  1. Click ExportCAD Formats(DGN).
  2. In the DGN Export dialog, if the desired setup is not listed under Select Export Setup, select a different one from the drop-down list. To modify the selected setup or create a new one, click (Modify Export Setup); otherwise, skip to step 5.
The left panel of the Modify DGN Export Setup dialog lists all existing export setups. Settings for the currently selected setup display on the tabs. Use the following controls to manage setups:
New Export Setup. Uses default settings.
Duplicate Export Setup. Creates new setup using settings from the currently selected setup.
Rename Export Setup. Prompts you to specify new name for currently selected setup.
Delete Export Setup. Deletes the selected setups (except for the default <in session export setup> which cannot be deleted).
  3. In the Modify DGN Export Setup dialog, specify export options on the following tabs as needed, and then click OK.
  4. In the DGN Export dialog, specify which views and sheets are to be exported to the DGN file.
If you want to export… Then…
    a single view for Export, select <Current View/Sheet Only>.
multiple views and sheets for Export, select <In session view/sheet set>, and then select the views and sheets to export (see About Creating View and Sheet Sets).
  5. If you are ready to export, click Next. (Or click Save Set & Close to save the current export settings and close the dialog without exporting.)
  6. In the Export CAD Formats dialog, navigate to the target folder for the exported files.
  7. For Naming, select an option for the automatically generated file name.
  8. If you want views placed on sheets or linked files in the project to be exported to a single file rather than to several files that reference each other, make sure the Export views on sheets and links as DGN references option is cleared. (The default setting for this option is specified on the General tab of the Modify DGN Export Setup dialog referenced in step 3.)
  9. Click OK.

Revit exports the selected views and sheets to DGN files and places them in the target folder. If the selection set contains elements for which export to DGN is not supported, you are prompted to either export without those elements or cancel the operation.

Note: Geometry always exports to DGN as polymeshes.
The following table maps Revit objects and features to their MicroStation counterparts where applicable.
Revit to DGN Conversion Table
Revit MicroStation Notes
Geometric Elements Geometric Elements

Includes detail lines, model lines, and 2D presentations of Revit elements. (If you need to export 3D objects to DGN, you can use the same algorithm used in Revit 2012 by adding the UseVersion2012DGN key to the Revit.ini file.)

Colors Colors Colors are matched as closely as possible. Categories set to export with index color are translated directly to the DGN color index. If true color is used and a direct match of RGB values is available in the DGN color index, the colors are also mapped directly. If a true color match is not available, an RGB value is added to the DGN color index.
Line Patterns Line Styles Custom linetypes are unsupported and could produce unexpected results.
Families Cells Families are exported as shared cells.
Model Text, Text Notes Lines, Text, Text Styles Model text is exported as lines; text notes are exported as text.
Dimensions, Dimension Styles Dimensions, Dimension Styles The size, spacing, style, and shape of dimensions may vary slightly. The correct dimension values are always maintained.
Raster Images Raster Images BMP, TIF, PNG, and JPG file types are supported.
Links DGN References Depending on the export option specified, referenced RVT and DWG files are either converted into DGN files or combined into a single DGN file as cells.
View DGN Design Model The view in a Revit project file is converted into a DGN file.
Sheets DGN Sheet Model Upon export to V8, sheets are converted into sheet models in the DGN file. Because V7 only supports one model, several DGN files may be exported: one for the model and others for the sheet views in the Revit project file.
AEC Objects   Imported objects from AutoCAD Architecture are not supported.
