Roads Tutorial 4 Exercise 1: Analysing a Road

This exercise shows you how to perform sight analysis on a design road, both for stopping sight distance and passing sight distance.

  1. Go to the bookmark Sight Distance.
  2. Select the road.
  3. Open the Roadway Design tools and select Sight Distance.
  4. Close the toolbar and the asset card to clear the view.
  5. Click Analyse.
  6. Note the blue lines that appear on the road and note the colour key.

    The blue (cyan) colour indicates that drivers's sight is clear along this stretch of the road.

  7. Click Sight Envelopes.

    This displays the zones with clear or obstructed visibility.

  8. Change the direction from Forward to Backward.
  9. Click Analyse again.

    This analyses the lane in the other direction.

  10. Change the Method from Stopping SIght Distance to Passing Sight Distance
  11. Click Analyse again.

    This analyses visibility for a driver trying to pass in this direction.

  12. Go to the bookmark Sight Distance 2.
  13. Turn on Sight Envelopes, if it's turned off.
  14. Change the Method to Stopping Sight Distance and click Analyse.

    There are sight failures and obstructions in both directions, so you'll need to fix these problems.
