Roads Tutorial 4 Exercise 2: Correcting Sight Failures

The last exercise uncovered some problems when the road was analysed for stopping sight distance. In this exercise, you'll make some adjustments to the road that will correct these problems.

  1. Click Place Sight Pin.

The sight pin allows you to make a more detailed analysis of a sight failure zone.

  2. Wait till the sight pin turns blue.
  3. Click the end of the yellow zone to place the sight pin.
  4. Click Place Sight Pin again.
  5. Place the pin half way along the yellow zone.

The obstruction is more extensive from this point. See if tree trimming solves the problem.

  6. Select a few of the trees along the edge of the road inside the curve and delete them.
  7. Select the road and click Analyse.

The sight failure zone should be greatly reduced.

  8. Note that even after tree removal, there is still a slight obstruction (shown in red).

The trees are not the problem.

  9. Go to the bookmark Sight Distance 4.

Now you can see the grips for horizontal editing of the road.

  10. Open the Model Explorer.
  11. Turn off visibility for the Trees layer.

This will speed up editing of the model.

  12. Close the Model Explorer.
  13. Grab the cube grip for the road curve and drag it to the left.
  14. Click Analyse.
  15. Note that the sight failure zone has been eliminated.
