Roads Tutorial 1 Exercise 5: Vertical Editing

Vertical, or profile editing, is the other basic skill you will need to work with design roads. This exercise shows you how to use the vertical editing controls and introduces you to Profile View.

  1. Select the design road.
  2. Close the asset card.
  3. Tilt the view to about 45 degrees using the left mouse button.

Note that the grips on the road change as you move to an oblique view.

  4. Zoom in a little.
  5. Grab the green cube grip and drag it vertically up to about 1935.

Raising the elevation at this point drastically reduces the amount of cut required.

  6. Pan the view to the right using the right mouse button.
  7. Open the Profile View.

The green line shows the existing ground surface. The black line is the proposed road profile.

  8. Zoom into the model.
  9. Mouse over the triangle marker to the left of center in the Profile View and note how it is also highlighted in the model.
  10. Drag the sliders to zoom the profile view.
  11. Right-click the profile and select Add PVI.

This adds a point of vertical intersection in the area that you want to adjust.

  12. Grab the triangle marker and drag it vertically to about 1935.
  13. Zoom further into the Profile View using the mouse wheel.
  14. Grab the marker and drag it down to about 1933.
  15. Close the Profile View.
  16. Click away from the road to deselect it.
