Calculate the angle of spring-in for a laminate due to part geometry and changes in temperature or moisture.
Click to open the Spring-In dialog shown below.
Two tabs are included in the Spring-In window:
- Laminate: Define the laminate to be used in the calculator. The laminate can be defined in either of two ways:
- Use an existing Laminate - Any laminate stored in the Helius Composite material database can be read and loaded into the Laminate tab. To view a list of available laminates in the database, click Open under the Laminate tab. You can select any laminate from the list by double-clicking the name of the desired laminate. This prompts Helius Composite to read the material data file of the selected laminate and display its data. The laminate data shown in the display window of the Laminate tab includes the material type, thickness, and fiber orientation angle for each material ply in the laminate.
- Create a new Laminate - Instead of using a laminate stored in the material database, you can build a new laminate in the Laminate tab using the same procedure described earlier (Create a New Laminate). After defining the material and geometric data for the new laminate, name the laminate (in the Laminate Name box). Click Save to store the new material in the material database before attempting to perform any analysis on the laminate. (Note, the Lamina drop-down menu will include all of the laminae available in the material database when the Spring-In window was opened.)
- Calculate: Click the Calculate tab in the Spring-In window to view the display shown below:
Six loading inputs are available: angle of the part about the x-axis (Theta X), angle of the part about the y-axis (Theta Y), radius of curvature in the x-direction, radius of curvature in the y-direction, change in temperature (Delta Temperature), and the change in moisture content (Delta Moisture).
Note: only unsymmetric laminates require the radius of curvature inputs.
Once the input has been completed, click Calculate. The following results are displayed:
- Theta - Change in angle of the laminate due to part geometry and moisture or thermal loading.
